10 Years of Fashion

Mary Kate and Ashley have always been considered a fashion icon, and even if the dumpster chic style isn't your favorite inspiration is still found in any of their looks. Designers also receive the blessing of MK&A wearing them and have reported sales spiking when the girls are photographed with one of their pieces.

The online home of vogue, appropriately named- style.com has done a feature on ten years of fashion from the iconic duo. Since my love for MK&A is abundant, I was filled with tingles when I saw this fantastic headline. You can see how their personal style influenced the major trends over the past 10 years.

The Bardot Stripe was everywhere on the runway in S/S 09, and now the retail stores are distributing it to the masses. The striped colors that you should stick to are Navy or Black. They say fashion is cut throat, and a current close-to-season trend is ironically the ripped black opaque tights.

If you aren't careful with how you wear your tights you could easily go from chic to cheap. To wear your tights appropriately you need to balance out the rest of your outfit by layers, or a basic dress or top/skirt combination. If you wear your latest mini tee with your denim booty shorts and favorite Ugg boots, don't be surprised if someone comes up and asks you "how much?".

Ripped tights are a cheap, fun and easy DIY project.

My ripped tights.

My ripped tights weren't done on purpose, but after a few clumsy accidents the rips became larger and I let them run on the right leg, but applying clear nail polish to the left legs single slash so it wouldn't rip further.

If you do black ripped opaque tights correctly, you will look like you just stepped off the runway and you are fashion forward ( besides when it was done in the 80's). Just be careful, you don't want to look like you are wearing your walk of shame tights.

Louis Vuitton is known for their beautiful and creative advertisements each season. They are building up the anticipation for the release of their ads by slowly letting one out at a time for Spring/Summer 10.

Trembled Blossoms

Today I was exposed to a fascinating video done for the Spring 08 Prada Collection, it was a screening done February 5 during the New York Fashion Week leading up to the show.

Even though this video is from the Spring 08 collection, and Prada has already wowed us with their Spring 09 and Spring 10 collection this video is well worth a watch.

It features an animated fashion form, based on ink drawings and it depicts a wonderland forest of flowers and fairy like creatures and it embodies Prada's collection at that time.

A wonderland forest of fairies and Prada? I knew Miuccia Prada always understood my deepest fantasies.

The fashion savvy should recognize the print at 2:00, and most should recognize the surprise at 2:40.

Close To Season Trends.

The two season fashion cycle in the mass market industry is slowly becoming something of the past, and is more influenced by "fast fashion". There still is fashion trends that are introduced every two seasons- groundbreaking on the runways of fashion week and take part in the diffusion process from the designer->contemporary->mass market-> discount. Well, fast fashion has become a big party of the mass market shoppers with stores like Zara and TopShop setting the trends by what they see all around. Fast Fashion creates close to season trends, which is what fills up the street and changes quicker then you can say "fast fashion" 10 times backwards.

8 Influences on close-to-season trend, and fast fashion.

TopShop, the fashion "go-to" of the streets. TopShop has started more trends then any other fast fashion company. TopShop is based in London with a newly opened NewYork location, and I am thrilled that now you can shop TopShop online here.
Designer diffusion lines, for example Karl Lagerfeld for H&M allows people to the chance to wear the designer look for a fraction of the price.
Celebrity marketing, most people will jump at a chance to wear something that is on the hottest celebrity of the moment. Which is why designers hand out their merchandise for free marketing, and to start new trends.
Re creating "vintage", designer for fast fashion will go search for vintage pieces for their next inspiration. Celebrity marketing, most people will jump at a chance that is on the hottest celebrity of the moment.
You! Trend forecasters go to the streets to see what the fashion savvy individual is wearing. The world is our runway.
Celebrity designed lines such as Kate Moss for TopShop, Nicole Richie's Jewelry line House of Harlow, Lindsay Lohan's legging line 6126 Leggings, Gwen Stefani line L.A.M.B and my personal favorite Mary Kate & Ashley's line Elizabeth and James.
The constant inspirational designers for the fast fashion companies designers like Stella McCartney Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Manufacturing in Turkey, Turkish manufacturing is the now go to for factory-to-store merchandise. The speed-to-market industry has made countries such as Turkey and India the go to Countries for Fast Fashion.

This past weekend I had a miracle happen, at the sample sale I was working at The Roosevelt Hotel on Sunday I worked with another girl who also worked at American Apparel. Well, as soon as I found this out I pounced on her about getting me the navy disco pant 1/2 off, and since the closest American Apparel was less then a block away she couldn't refuse.

Boy Band of Outsiders

I was looking through my schools trend predictives for NewYork Fashion Weeks Spring/Summer 2010. I came across this collection, "Boy Band of Outsiders" and I am obsessed.

Scott Sternberg, the designer has stayed true to his "rebel-prep" roots. Boy Band of Outsiders was founded in 2004, in menswear "Band of outsiders". Women caught wind of Sternbergs collection, and his ability to change classic pieces into something fresh and started purchasing smalls of his menswear collection. Sternberg launched his womenswear collection in 2008, adding "Boy" in front of the previous collection title for an added touch of irony.

How can you not adore the menswear inspired collection? The oversized mens pea coat/dress, the body-con green and navy wrap skirt or denim cropped trousers? Amazing.

Keep your eye out for Boy Band of Outsiders, it has only been gracing the runways since 08- but I have a feeling it will be around for many more seasons.

Spring 2010, Homeschoolers and Denim.

If you had asked me a year ago if I had wanted the denim button-up to be back in style for Spring/Summer 10 I would have done the valley girl style gagging and said no. I think my previous distaste for denim clothing comes from my former years as a homeschooler and the assumed denim floor length skirt that I never wore, but always fearfully hid from.

Well, fashion is always surprising and here I am a year later confessing that, I love denim button-ups! Apparently I am not the only one, because one of the biggest close-to-season trends and trend for Spring/Summer 10 is the denim shirt.

Everyone knows fashion always comes back around, and the 80's took over our fashion trends this past Spring/Summer 09 (acid wash denim, burn out, sequins and neons) it is still influencing currently with denim, even though acid wash is now washed out from the fashion trends.

I was in fact so excited about my denim purchase the other day, that I did a fashion illustration and technical flat in pencil of it.

Denim jumpers/dress.
Overalls (full length or shorts).
Shoes with denim embellishments.

The denim shirt is predicted to be all over the retail stores this Spring/Summer. J.Crew, Madewell, American Apparel, and Urban Outfitters have already started carrying the shirt. Although, I will still scream, run and hide if I see a denim floor length skirt.

OMFG. It's save to say anyone who has watched The CW's show, Gossip Girl hasn't been envious of the leading ladies style. Now, we can now get the scoop on the shows fabulous style because Gossip Girl Costume Designers, Eric Daman's has written a book "You Know You Want It". When I heard about this book I was filled with so much excitement I did a little dance, and am eagerly awaiting December 15 when the book is released. And only $29.99?!

Today while working a large sample sale held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, that held by Forward Fashion, I came across the retail channel "Moods of Norway". Moods of

Norway is a Norwegian brand that brings together the "hillbilly dilly lifestyle of glaciers, salmon fishing and one newly opened escalator and nights of cocktails and world traveling" one of the three business partner, Stefan Dahlkvist said.

Moods of Norway is a beautiful and eccentric collection with amazing Mens wear ranging from plaid suits to velour track suits, and Womens wear with to-die-for cocktail dresses or a bomber style puffer jacket. Moods of Norway has a showroom in the town of Stryn, but also a store off Robertson Blvd, with a giant tractor hanging above the door.

I was lucky enough to meet two of the three owners of the company, and the men are fabulous and charismatic men full of personality making it clear how they could become so established in only 6 years.

Stefan has a bright blue limo that he drives as his every day car, and at the sale they had a table set up with a Belgium waffle maker.

The company focuses ingenious little details, with a beautiful lookbook, cleverly placing little tractor embellishments on each garment and placing dance steps on the bottom of their shoe boxes. As well as labeling the inside of each suit jacket with "Made by really really pretty blondes" and the pants "inspired by deep Fjords a few cocktails and a grandmother with exquisite taste".

Moods of Norway is complete with a amazing brand, company and people. I know I will go to Robertson for a visit soon. After some harassing and minor eyelash batting I lured two determined Kentucky State football fans staying in the hotel to the sale. Leading them directly to Moods of Norway, one bought a shiny white suit, stating it was for New Years (purchased for $250, instead of $549 jacket, $179 pant retail price) while his friend happily munched on a waffle.

Before Boho Was Chic

Edie Beale, or Little Edie has been a recent fashion inspiration for me. Edie was an American socialite, fashion model and cabaret performer. She was eccentr

ic and a free spirit filling her life with fluff, fur and jewels. Edie lived frivolously and irresponsible hoping to live up to her former socialite mother and cousin Jackie O spending much of her time in her crumbling mansion in East Hampton's. She layered her clothes, and took the current fashion trends to the next level.

Little Edie was found in her crumbling East Hampton mansion with her Mother, and it was litterally falling down around them. She refused to sell any of the jewels and furs that could have saved her from poverty. Little Edie spent much of her time in threadbare couture, dressing up in quirky ensembles wearing sweaters as skirts, tops as capes and swim wear as evening wear, attempting to re create her glory years.

Edie also suffered from Alopecia, which caused her hair to fall out- making her known for her beautiful signature turbans.

Designers such as John Galliano, Philip Lim and Marc Jacobs have refereed to the tragic Edie as inspiration.

Little Edie inspired boho chic, and her sporadic, jeweled, layered fashion style is something I try to portray through my style.

A Rare Species.

The idea for this blog was inspired from a previous Halloween costume idea I had. Those of you who have been out in Hollywood, have seen the typically handsome men with a blackberry attached to his palm running around using terms "yah good?" or "Hi beautiful, need anything?" Yes, you called it- I am talking about Club Promoters. I tip my hat, (beanie or fedora- you choose) to these men, without them the experience of going out would be sub par. However, if you are out and find yourself unsure if you are watching a promoter franticly run around the club while maintaing a cool, relaxed, charismatic vibe and managing to pay just enough attention to each girl at the table to make them feel special, their is a strict wardrobe that is assumed.

First we start with the basic, the deep v-neck (sometimes switched up with other forms of tees):

You can stop your worrying, I have yet to refrain from my constant wearing of the "Disco Pant". It is still frequently adorning my legs in it's shiny, shaping, spandex glory. I am eagerly awaiting till tomorrow when I will binge on the navy pair... I can hear it now- " Hi, my name is Rebecca and I am addicted to the Disco Pant".

I had another photo-shoot with Brigitte Magazine this past Monday, and it was refreshing to wear mostly designers out of the States. I am unable to post any pictures of the clothing in the shoot till the magazine is published, but I am anxious to show when it is. Studded Obsession.

Any of you who know me, know that I have a borderline creepy obsession with Mary Kate and Ashley Oslen.

While browsing through my favorite websites -cough, stalker, cough- that document Mk&A's fabulous fashion, I saw a photo of Ashley sporting this amazing Givenchy (Ricardo Tisci, you are a genius) studded leather biker jacket. Things like this jacket is why my love for Mk&A is everlasting- stop judging me.

30 Years of Vogue

I was in the FIDM library yesterday, which is a treasure trove of books, trend forecasting predictives and biographies on anyone in fashion- to name a few. I stumbled across this book, "Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue".

Grace Coddington has been the Creative Director for American Vogue for the past fourteen years. "Grace" is a collection of Coddingtons greatest works, a visual tribute and celebration to her life in fashion.

As I was flipping through the book every photo was more beautiful then the one before, I was taken back by each creative and innovative photograph, lost in the pages.

Anyone who is interested in fashion, art or photography should take a moment with this book and be ready to feel inspired. The book was sold for $120- however it was a limited edition collectors piece, and now is sold on Amazon starting at $1,240 new and $1,153 used. The good news is, many libraries have this book in stock.

People Watching

Melrose Trading Post is my new Sunday tradition. The fabulous vintage pieces you can haggle for and amazing trinkets and jewelry you can accessories yourself with is something I look forward to every week. If you pull yourself away from the stands filled up with goodies, you are bound to see some trendy people walking through the flea market.

These two were haggling for used books, but I loved the suede fringe jacket which she said she found at the flea market and the red maryjanes- I wish they were better pictured.

This guy walked past me earlier, and I immediately appreciated his sexy and laid back James Dean style, later finding him with his girlfriend who also had a chilled look in a vintage flannel button up with her boyfriends jacket.

She was just to cute to pass up in her baggy aztec sweater and cut off shorts.

I was planning on purchasing this dress and cutting it shorter, however once the lady told me it was "vintage, vintage" not just "vintage" ( I didn't get it either)... I passed on the dress because of the "vintage, vintage" price tag and a bloodstain I found.

Today, I had my second photoshoot with Brigitte Magazine, a German magazine (comparable to Harpers Bazaar of the US) I was scouted for a few weeks ago at the Melrose Trading Post. The shoot was a story on "Old Hollywood Divas" and I was Elizabeth Taylor, I snapped these two photos. I will post the actual prints when I get them, the two gowns I wore were beautiful. Check out the magazine here. Now I know that short hair is something I don't see in my near future, although it was a fun change.

Everyone knows what the day after Thanksgiving is, the highly anticipated "Black Friday" when the sophisticated shoppers are able to drag themselves out of bed in hopes to find great deals on the newest gadget or the boots you've been dreaming of for weeks.

Since my mother decided to do the unthinkable and cruel act of freezing my credit card earlier this month, I decided to do the "responsible" thing and ignore the great deals that were waiting for me just outside my apartment walls.

Well, my self restraint was momentarily because as soon as my friend called around 230 and asked for lunch and a quick walk around Melrose the "yes, be there in 30" came out of my mouth before she had finished.

I did make time to photograph my outfit.

I resisted on everything I saw, but couldn't when I saw these vintage leather and suede brown boots. Finding vintage boots in my size, is like finding a needle in a haystack. Thank you big foot. I also got a divine off-white dress, now just a place to wear it would be great.

Clearly I am someone that gets more then just the normal experience out of shopping, it is more of a self destructive/self enhancing (you pick) adventure for me- especially concerning the vintage whim I've been on for a while. Now to figure out how to get my Mother to understand that.

Savvy Friends at Dinner.

A large group of friends and I had a potluck style Thanksgiving dinner, Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve. Being so lucky and having extremely savvy friends I managed to catch two outfits, and mine before getting distracted by the mash potatoes.

My friend Kyle Kaplan, who is one of the sweetest men I know is wearing dark skinny jeans, and dress shoes with a perfect toe.

I was prancing around in a vintage navy babydoll dress ( which I found out later was completely see through) and black over the knee boots.

There were many other fabulous outfits throughout the night, some pieces I can remember:

Orphans and Indians.

Thanksgiving evening my friend Andrei called me and being a fellow orphan on a day typically associated with bringing family together, drags me out of my apartment and we went to a variety of places, but ended up at Hyde Lounge in Hollywood.

Immediately upon entering I saw this lovely girl strutting around in this headdress.

When asking her why she chose to wear a headdress, ( besides the obvious representation of Pilgrims and Indians) she said " I just love dressing up, I love throwing on whatever is scattered around my bedroom"

Also my recent post of "Little Doe is love", the collection that is full of beautiful customized headpieces, made me even more excited to see her confidently showing off her headpiece in a Hollywood Lounge.

In preparation for Thanksgiving, which is tomorrow I am deciding what I want to wear to the festivities. The Harem Pant is a fad that I tried to like, I wanted to like and I sat convincing myself they looked great by saying things like, "at least my calfs looked skinny". The pant/skirt/diaper combination was always on the line on fashion forward or a fashion faux pas. I never did buy a pair and now I am regreting it because it would be the best pant to wear to a Thanksgiving feast!

Stretchy comfortable waistband.
You can, at moments notice sling yourself across the table to get that last piece of pumpkin pie.
Great for the mid-meal stretching.
You can easily store some stuffing and left over turkey in between your legs for later, keeping judgmental stares away from those who didn't think to wear the Harem Pant and continue eating your "seconds".

The Disco Pant

These high waisted spandex leggings have the features of pants with the comfort of leggings, I bought them last week at American Apparel.. yes I was a little nervous about the fit and hesitant to spend $78 on anything at American Apparel. My friend Jennifer wore them a few weeks earlier and it was love at first sight, I dreamt about them every day and knew it was fate. I caved in, bought them and never looked back. I became quickly attached, we were inseparable and seven days later I was still wearing them.. seven days in a row that is. They are the most amazing pant/legging you will ever feast your eyes upon.

I wore them:

Out that night with a cropped top.
The next day to Starbucks with a baggy tee shirt to study.
Out that night with a cropped sequined top (pictured below).
The next morning to the Melrose Trading Post (flea market) with boots and a sloppy tucked in v-neck.
The next day to a job interview with a vintage dress.
To class on Tuesday and Wednesday, and out to a Samsung launch party with a mens button up Wednesday night.
To a photo shoot Thursday morning and then to my first day on the job (I got it!) with boots and a long black shirt, and then to the event I was working at that night simply throwing on heels and a necklace.

Finally my roommate sat me down and told me we needed a brake and it was time to wash them, and after a few tears and protesting I peeled them off my legs and dropped them into the wash.

Little Doe, I Love

I stumbled across this unusual collection today by "LittleDoe", what first caught my eye was the thumbnail image of a messy haired girl with a pointed stare looking innocent but determined and a little mischievous, as if it was snapped after she was spotted prancing nude in a field and you are unsure if she did or didn't know she was being watched. Once opening the image I saw the exceptional headpiece she was wearing. Well, being the sucker I am for anything concerning nudity and fields I had to find where this picture came from and if their was more. I am not sure where this particular soft spot comes from, possibly the countless times my three sisters and I would sneak over to my neighbors horse farm, strip off our clothes and dance the afternoon away in the fields.

After a little bit more searching, and the help of Google images I found the source for these fabulous photographs and headpieces. The designer Chase Cohl creates custom headpieces which are all extravagant and beautiful creations that I only wish my sisters and I had to adorn ourselves with in our whims of frolicking. Cohl stated that she made headpieces that were inspired by "those floaty, long-haired California women of the 60's & 70's".

Just as beautiful as the headpieces is the photography for the LookBook featuring the collection. The neo-hippie and antique photos are divine and give me the sensation to run through the streets of Downtown LA blasting Bob Dylan, The doors and maybe a little Jefferson Airplane.
